Ask any migraine sufferer if they would be willing to try alternative means to avoid the onset of a migraine, and the odds are good that she or he is more than willing to try pretty much anything. It is therefore somewhat surprising to find that a lot of migraine sufferers have failed to look to acupuncture for a possible prevention method. Granted, to the uninitiated the use of acupuncture needles might be somewhat scary, but when speaking with a seasoned practitioner it soon becomes obvious that many of these fears are based on misconceptions about the ancient holistic practice of acupuncture.

Holistic intervention in pain management is of course already accepted practice, and back pain sufferers swear by acupuncture needles for the arrival of speedy relief and easing of pain that even commercially available prescription pain killers have failed to eradicate. Acupuncturists are now experimenting with acupuncture as an actual means of migraine symptom prevention, and patients with this neurological disorder are guardedly optimistic.

At the heart of the migraine acupuncture is a restoration and protection of the life force that travels through the body. During an impending migraine attack the life force, or energy, is no longer able to freely travel through the body. The insertion of acupuncture needles at strategically mapped places on the body seeks to open up the body to permit the energy to once again move unfettered. Since migraine pain is known to begin with a gradual clenching of the muscles and narrowing of the capillaries, acupuncture has been hailed as the premier means of catching an attack before it has the chance to fully materialize.

This may reduce the actual severity of a migraine headache or muscle pains, and in some cases it could actually prevent a migraine attack from happening at all. Moreover, since acupuncture is known to release endorphins in the body, the pain killing powers of the natural system are harnessed to such an extent that even the slight discomfort that may have tipped off the patient to the impending migraine attack may be effectively counteracted.

Although it is hard to exactly figure out when a migraine attack may hit, it is possible to anticipate the onset of an episode and book an acupuncture appointment accordingly. In the alternative, it may be an even better idea to plan on having a regular acupuncture appointment that could be viewed as a simple prophylactic to ward off the potential for a migraine attack. Mind you, there is no guarantee that undergoing acupuncture will completely prevent any and all migraine pains forever.

Instead, this practice should be seen as one of the many non pharmaceutical tools available to migraine patients that ease or prevent the pain. Additional tools may need to be employed as well. Fortunately, there are a lot of holistic approaches that are now being used by a plethora of migraine patients and a good many cite the combination of approaches, such as relaxation techniques and cardiovascular exercise, as being highly effective in keeping them pain free more often.
